Windows 7 official name

Microsoft has revealed yesterday the official name of the news Windows version, known until now under the code name Windows Seven or Windows 7 because it's the seventh "big" Windows version.

Suspense... :-)

The official name of Windows 7 will be Windows 7.

Mike Nash explains on the Windows Vista blog that the decision is based on simplicity.

Over the years, Microsoft has taken different approaches to naming Windows. They've used version numbers like Windows 2, 3.11, or dates like Windows 95, 98, or "aspirational" monikers like XP or Vista.

As there are not a version of Windows every year, «using a date did not make sense». (sic!) :-) And (I'm still quoting) «coming up with an all-new "aspirational" name does not do justice to what we are trying to achieve, which is to stay firmly rooted in our aspirations for Windows Vista, while evolving and refining the substantial investments in platform technology in Windows Vista into the next generation of Windows.»

According to me, a sentence that means absolutely nothing. Maybe my English is too bad to understand but I think this is a commercial empty phrase.

This Windows 7 should be shipped near the end of the year 2009, if everything works good. The improvements are about the hardware management, in particular the multi-core CPU. Internet Explorer 8 will of course be imposed included.

The good news for competitors (if there are still any), Windows will give up the e-mail software and Movie Maker. :-)
